Medieval Musical Evening Kingsbury Barn Saturday 24th May
24 May, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm£10
The St Albans Civic Society are organising a medieval concert in Kingsbury Barn on Saturday 24th May 2014 to raise money towards renaissance: St Albans – your new museum and gallery at the heart of the city.
Come along and enjoy an unusual evening in the fourteenth century barn with music of its time to match! A happy evening of deliciously tuneful and cheerful popular music from the 12th to 16th Centuries featuring fascinating early instruments in the fourteenth century Kingsbury Barn.
King Henry’s Band really is unique – a fascinating blend of modern technology and 16th century (and earlier….) music and instruments in a novel and entertaining performance by Robert FitzGerald from Norfolk. On Saturday 24th May at 7.30 pm the Band (or some of it!) can be seen and heard again in Kingsbury Manor Barn in a performance sponsored by The St Albans Civic Society to assist in funding the new Museum and Gallery.
Robert’s parallel expertise with hi-tech recording technology has tempted him to re-create, with his instruments, a whole series of semi-complete ensembles featuring all manner of delicious instruments ranging from krummhorns through to sorduns, cornamuses, psaltery, string-drums (and not forgetting the raucous rauschpfeife) and many more, so that when the ‘missing’ instrument is added to the very discretely reproduced ensembles in live performance the result is magical. The whole concept is based on the unreliability of Tudor musicians who regularly fail to honour engagements! Robert has been performing music of this period for many years and indeed several instruments that he plays have come from his own workshop. 2014 sees a busy performing calendar through to Christmas. The Band is always a hot favourite at The National Trust’s Christmas event at their beautiful Norfolk flagship property Blickling Hall, the birth place of Anne Boleyn. A highlight of 2013 was a concert for the prestigious King’s Lynn Music Society
The emphasis is very much on tuneful and light-hearted music to be enjoyed by all. Nothing too serious – just pure fun! The atmosphere is all helped along by an appropriate setting and props.
Comments are uniformly very favourable, some almost embarrassingly so! This will be the Band’s second visit to the wonderful surroundings of Jill and Adam Singer’s barn which adds so much to the atmosphere of the amazing sounds you will hear. The previous concert was packed out and highly praised.
We thank Robert FitzGerald for his expertise and generosity in giving this concert enabling all proceeds to go towards the new museum and gallery.
Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or juice in the interval courtesy of the St Albans Civic Society.
Special thanks to Jill and Adam Singer for allowing the use of the barn for the evening.
The evening is just not to be missed. Sponsored by The St Albans Civic Society, programmes are £10 at the door (incl. wine) but advance booking is strongly advised – contact Jill Singer ([email protected]). Please also contact Jill for disabled parking, will others please use the Verulamium Museum car park.
