Courtroom - cafe artist impression, June 2015 rev1A new museum and gallery for all: Our Town Hall was designed in 1831 with everyone in mind. It combines a grand ballroom, a court room with prison cells below and Georgian civic chambers. All these features still exist. Now, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform this beautiful Grade II* listed building into a glorious new museum and gallery is about to be realised.

This project aims to ensure that the whole community can benefit from and learn about the region’s rich cultural heritage, view history through the lens of St Albans and discover innovative contemporary art. It has been described in the Herts Advertiser as “… one of the most exciting developments the city has seen for decades“.

Come to admire: A new basement gallery will provide a sophisticated space for art, learning and events. It will attract exhibitions of national and international importance for visitors and residents to enjoy.

Stay to Create: From lectures and debates with famous names in contemporary life, to hands-on workshops with artists in residence, you’ll be able to find your inner artist, philosopher or historian in this inspiring and playful space.

A venue for everyone: While the new museum and galleries will be an impressive place for special events, it is also a place for everyday experiences and recreation. Offering spaces to think, dream, meet, celebrate and learn, there’ll be something for everybody to enjoy, whoever you are and wherever your interests lie.

Learn, discover, think: See St Albans as you’ve never seen it before, with spectacular glass viewing galleries on the east and west sides of the building giving bird’s-eye views of the City. Inside, exhibitions will connect visitors with 2,000 years of our City’s unique history in new and fascinating ways.

St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, in partnership with St Albans Museums and the University of Hertfordshire, launched the “renaissance: St Albans” project.
